Home Ec 101

I just signed up for an online sewing class for beginners over at Freckled Nest. I’m so excited! I’m kind of on a budget for fabric and stuff though. Guam’s few fabric stores are pretty pricey. I think I’ll be surfing the web for bargains on fabric and notions before class starts.

My sewing experience consists of home ec in sixth grade, adventures in sock monkey making, and a few lessons from my grandmother which resulted in one outfit. I was quite proud of it. Then Wayne deployed, we bought a condo, moved, I went back to work … la la la. Life got in the way and I didn’t get to sew much anymore. Granny made Zoey a few more outfits before she flew back to Florida. My machine and iron are at my mom’s house and I don’t even own an ironing board yet.

I’m going to make time for it now – not to mention find space for it. Zoey’s older now – maybe she’ll let me sew without trying to “help” me. Maybe. Ha.

  • I’ve been looking at fabric on Etsy – surfing around is the key to getting the best deal. I also like lusting after coordinated quilting stacks. Some really neat prints at fabricworm.com. Man. I wish we had a store that cool here.

  • Oh and I like to browse through Etsy for fat quarters of fabric and see how everyone else coordinates their fabric.

  • I just yell at the kids “DON’T TOUCH THAT SEWING MACHINE!” and they mostly stay away. Mostly. You can probably give her scraps to cut with her safety scissors. The kids like to use the scraps to play with their little dolls and stuffed animals as scarfs, etc. But hey, that’s really great! I can’t wait to see what you make.
