I went to the Poetry Slam last night, and I have to say, I was pretty surprised by the talent of some of our locals. A few of them even went up there and did their piece freestyle – which is hella hard to do. I even give props to those who weren’t quite so good, because they had the guts to get up there in front of a standing room only crowd and share something original. I didn’t quite have the guts this time. I was tempted, but intimidated by countless episodes of HBO’s Def Poets floating around inside my head. Better to scope out the competition in advance.
The two experienced poets who opened the show and did an intermission set – Jay Pascual and Melvin Won Pat-Borja – were pretty amazing. And inspiring. I was writing in my sleep. Melvin promised they’d have another Slam … and I’m seriously considering signing up for the next one.
This winter break has been action packed thus far – more than I could ever have imagined a few weeks ago. And it ain’t over.
I can’t and won’t list all that’s been happening to me over the past week. Maybe someday I’ll blog about my misadventures … I’m too discreet right now. Let some time pass and we’ll see. So why even write a post? To let you know I haven’t disappeared. I haven’t gotten anything done that I’d planned as of yet – no new template for this site has emerged, obviously.
However, I’ve had more fun than I deserve: met and made new friends, laughed until I’ve cried, danced to live music, shared a bottle of champagne, sunk my toes into white sand, and felt very, very good for the first time in a long while.
Feeling tired tonight is a modest price to pay. And the end of the year is now upon us.
2005 has been very good to me … especially this last month of it. I wonder what 2006 will bring? Whatever it is … I’m excited. And I’m ready.
